I've seen that one. You look over the cartoon all seriously wondering why the guards are giggling and then BOOM you spot the tack and you burst into stupidity laughter!

I think Lee nailed it. Networking with other cartoonists who are trying to do the same thing as yourself is key. It's not a surefire solution, but it is a major step in the right direction.
