I know I must be wrong, Lee, but I'm skeptical of an art director who couldn't say "I need an illustration like this one." - I have done projects for directors who described just what they wanted and things went well.
Thanks.
Since I don't normally do cartoons (as in a strip or a panel) I was wondering.
Didn't want to spoil the stew.
I did a few single panel ones for Western Horseman a while back (full page color).
You are spot on.
Calvin and Hobbs - Best ever and my personal favorite all time.
I could quote your reasons as being mine too.
All I could say is that if I did strips, I would say "I wish I had done that" about this one.

Hey...
I drop by now and again - I've been told that I have an identity crisis - that may be the case.
I don't do strips, and I don't do conventional cartoons. I do mostly humorous illustrations - some of which verge on a cartoon style.
I do a varie…
For over 30 years I've done illustration for publication and gallery art (oils, watercolors, acrylics, etc.) The art has been used on everything from bus benches to ads, magazine illustrations, tv spots and gift products like coffee mugs, shirts, greeting cards and wall decor prints.
As an art director I designed annual reports, catalogs, brochures and ads (some of which ran in Time, Newsweek, USA Today and The Saturday Evening Post) and publications - managing a staff of artists and photographers, directing photo-shoots of products and on-location setups for companies and resorts, products (some involving models) from firearms and trophies to sports wear, boats, fishing gear and toys.
The humor illustration and painting has been the most popular and most widely published, inspired by growing up on a farm around tale-spinning great uncles and a menagerie of interesting critters.
Drawn, painted with Wacom Intuous 3 using Painter and Photoshop. I'm printing a mailer promo post card of this and a few other images to drum up some fresh freelance stuff.
